I can't even begin to tell you how happy Ozzy has been to be back home and how happy I am to see him back to his same happy self again. Honestly, going to a kennel for the very first time was very traumatic for him and when we got him back home on Sunday he was still pretty sketchy...it took him a day to get settled back in again and things have been smooth sailing since. I've got a call into the trainer to see about getting him over here and teaching the kids and I a few things, and Oz too! Kind of still on the fence though about neutering and will talk to the trainer about that. If you have any opinions on that, I'm open!

ReplyDeleteWell, after reading your other post about his experience at the kennel, and since you asked for thoughts, here´s my two cents.
I think that your decision to call your vet, who knows Ozzy and the consideration to get a good trainer to work with him and you, is a great idea.
I definitely recommend to use only positive training methods. Have you ever heard of clicker training? It is so easy and so much fun for the dog and the human, and the animals make such a huge progress with it. It can help him gain confidence and self awareness as well as self control for the unknown situations that make him struggle at the moment. There are many great books, articles and videos in internet on clicker training.
We use it for our huskies, started with it about a year ago and can´t imagine ever working without clicker and the positive methods.

ReplyDeleteMe and my brother had to get neutered because it was the rules from the humane society we're from. It hurt for a few days but now we don't try to escape and chase all the girls in the neighborhood, haha...

ReplyDeleteOver the years we have had horses and dogs, some neutered, some not. It depends on what you want to do with your dog. Basically if you are trying to show in confirmation so you can breed, you must keep your animal whole. If you want a pet, you'll find your dog and you are much less frustrated if the dog is neutered.
Hawk is neutered. He was neutered late (age 3) because of severe allergies. Originally he was a show dog. It's a long story that I did touch you way back when. Our male horses were always neutered unless being kept for breeding.
The longer you delay neutering, the more "doggie" habits your dog develops and the longer he takes to forget his hormones.
Often kennels don't want to board "whole" dogs, male or female.
Some people take a dog and leave it for a short "day care" stay when a dog hasn't been left before. You might want to try something like that before leaving your boy again. If the woman is comfortable working with you, it may be the beginning of a good relationship. If she has become frightened of the dog, perhaps the trainer can suggest someone to keep your boy.

I don't know anything about the reason's people keep a male dog "in tact", but I do know from a pet standpoint, they are much more pleasant and enjoyable if they are neutered. Especially around kids.

I'm all for neutering male dogs. Intact male dogs are responsible for most of the dog on human attacks. Doesn't mean that your dog will become aggressive, but if he does injure a person or another pet, you will be financially responsible. Also, depending on where you live, it might mean court-ordered euthanization.

We work with dog rescue and see so many dogs dumped, unwanted, pregnant moms and their babies, owner surrenders, and dogs people just get tired of that I have to say neutering and spaying is the way to go. AND for the reasons Rumpydog stated.

I have had all of my dogs neutered, except Dasko. He was 4 when I got him and had never shown any undesirable traits, such most male dogs show. It is healthier for the males as they are prone to prostrate cancer. KNowing all of this I still didn't. Can't tell you why, but he so not an alpha dog. I live on 5 acres and he never leaves the property. I think that is an individual decision. Hope Ozzie has a better experience at doggy camp nest time. Dasko is going the end of May. He loves Laura and sort of just tells me by.lol He is always happy to see me when I return.

Glad you are settling down after your prison - I mean kennel - experience. I was already neutered when I was adopted. My human is a big fan of adopting animals rather than buying, and adopted animals have to be spayed/neutered. Otherwise, both my human and I agree that the decision to spay/neuter is personal and your human should do what they feel is best. Good luck!
